With more species of birds than days in a year, Romania is definitely a top birdwatching destination. This means about half of all the birds that can be spotted in Europe.

Birdwatching in the Danube delta

Of course, the highlight for birdwatching in Romania is the Birdwatching Paradise, a.k.a. the Danube Delta. For birdwatching enthusiasts, it most probably requires no introduction.

The Danube Delta is truly a unique place in Europe. It comprises a vast complex of floating reed beds, poplar and willow forests, and wetland. And it’s crossed by an intricate network of channels. Given these points, it makes it indeed a perfect home for a vast number of bird species.

Its 30 types of ecosystems place it in the third position in the world biodiversity top after the Galapagos and the Great Barrier Reef. The Danube delta hosts over 300 species of birds, the majority protected. Therefore, it is easy to understand why it is considered the European El Dorado for birdwatching.

”Romania hosts the world’s largest population of the “Globally Threatened” Pygmy Cormorant with over 7000 pairs, and most are here in the Delta. There’s also Europe’s largest population of Eurasian White Pelican (3500 pairs), crucial numbers of Dalmatian Pelican and the core European population of Ferruginous Duck. Many Locustella and Acrocephalus warblers (Savi’s, Sedge, Paddyfield, Moustached, Marsh, Reed, Great Reed) have their largest European breeding populations in Romania.”

Dobrogea – another great place for birding

In addition to the delta and really close to it, lies Dobrogea.  Thie region hosts some eastern rarities and lots of other surprises in migration time. It’s geography and arid climate makes Dobrogea a unique place in Europe, its vegetation being the westernmost Asian-steppe.

When the strong winds from the Black Sea meet the steppe hills they change their direction to vertical, forming ascending currents. The lack of forests on many of the hills also create thermal currents. As you might have guessed, birds of prey totally benefit from this. Not to say that at the foothills there is plenty of prey for them. Dobrogea is known for a big population of Ground Squirrels, other rodents and reptiles.

Birdwatching during migration time is at its best here in regards to birds of prey. In addition, species that prefer arid areas considerably update your birding list after coming back from the delta. This duet of the regions can satisfy even the keenest birder.
To name just a few of the more common sightings, you can expect to see Honey Buzzards, Long Legged Buzzards, Short-Toed Eagles, Booted Eagles, Lesser Spotted Eagles, Pallid and Montagu’s Harriers. Sparrowhawks (even the Levant Sparrowhawk), Peregrine and Saker Falcons are also in the area. With a little bit more luck, even species like the Steppe Eagle, Greater Spotted Eagle and Imperial Eagle can be spotted.

Carpathians – to the top

But if you are a perfectionist and want to exceed every expectation on topping up your Romania birdwatching list then add to your trip a few days in the mountains.
Even if the abundance of species and individuals isn’t as high as the previous two regions, there are for sure new species to be observed.

Choose from a variety of birdwatching tours and nature holidays in the Danube Delta, Dobrogea, Transylvania and the Carpathians.

Birdwatching tours can be combined with other nature and wildlife observations tours.

If you feel like the birdwatching tour that attracts you could be adjusted to better fit your needs we can help you configure your perfect trip.

You can use the Custom Tour form or Contact form to let us know what kind of birdwatching tour you prefer and its whereabouts. You can even choose activities from other tours and combine them if the location and time makes it possible.

Note:

In the Danube Delta, we usually go with the floating hotel with groups between 12 and 20 persons. For a smaller group or even single travellers, we’ll use a small boat for transportation and guesthouses in villages of the Danube Delta, for accommodation.

The main season for nature observation and birdwatching begins in April and lasts until late November.
