If you are passionate about nature, wildlife, and authentic places, this journey is the perfect match for you.
Our program is designed for travelers who want to explore Transylvania’s rich wilderness at a relaxed pace, while enjoying unique wildlife encounters and discovering the region’s fascinating cultural heritage.
The adventure takes place in the area of the quiet village of Mercheasa, a gateway to ancient forests, rolling hills, and volcanic wonders. We’ll visit Romania’s oldest oak tree, hike across the wooded meadow landscape, and walk among the basalt cliffs of the Racoș volcano. Our days continue with hikes through limestone gorges, animal tracking activities, and evenings spent in hidden bear hides, observing brown bears in their natural habitat.
Along the way, we’ll immerse ourselves in the charm of Transylvanian villages, tasting local flavors and stepping into the centuries-old walls of some of the best preserved UNESCO-listed fortified churches.
This 4-day Transylvania nature and wildlife tour is about slowing down, connecting with nature, and creating unforgettable memories in one of Europe’s last truly wild places.

Program
Day 1: Arrival & Gentle afternoon hike to the Ancient Giants
Your journey begins with a warm welcome at the airport and a scenic transfer to the tranquil village of Mercheasa, your home for the next three days. After settling in and having a home-cooked lunch, we set off on a gentle afternoon walk through a landscape of wooded steppe and rolling hills.
We’ll pause beneath the gnarled branches of Romania’s oldest oak—a living monument rooted in centuries of silence. As the sun begins to set, we’ll enjoy a welcome drink and turn our gaze skyward, watching for birds in the evening light.
An easy, scenic walk to ease into the rhythm of nature.
Day 2: Cheile Vârghișului – Wilderness, Wildlife, and Bears
Today, we head into the wild gorge of Cheile Vârghișului, a hidden gem where nature still writes its own rules.
Our walk through limestone corridors will offer us the opportunity to track footprints, listen for bird calls, and read the quiet clues left by wildlife.
In the evening, we slip into the woods and settle into a bearhide, silently waiting as twilight stirs the forest. With luck and patience, the forest may reveal its most iconic inhabitant—the Carpathian brown bear.
Day 3: Forest Signs & Bear Encounters
The morning invites a slow forest walk, guided by tracks and whispers—roe deer, foxes, badgers, and the occasional owl feather. We’ll practice the art of noticing: mudprints, claw marks, the shape of a feather, the story in the moss. After this walk, we’ll explore the Racoș volcanic complex, with its dramatic basalt columns and colourful crater.
After lunch and a bit of rest, we prepare for our second bearhide experience—this time in a different area, giving us a new perspective on the forest’s evening rituals.
Day 4: Villages, Fortresses & Farewell Trails
We start the day with a relaxed short hike through pastures and meadows, enjoying the quiet pulse of rural life.
Then it’s time to visit Viscri, one of Transylvania’s most treasured Saxon villages and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here, the whitewashed walls of a fortified church hold centuries of history, and cobbled lanes speak of another time.
After lunch in the village, we return to Mercheasa for goodbyes, or continue on with new memories of a slower, wilder Romania.
