Autumn bird migration

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisp, the skies come alive with the sight of migratory birds painting a moving tapestry against the backdrop of Romania’s stunning landscapes, a reminder of nature’s rhythms and the wonders of the avian world.

Fall migration has already been underway for almost a month, beginning in mid-August, and the larger numbers of birds during the migration season make birding more interesting and spectacular.
Suppose the spring season is impressive with the birds’ melodious songs, colorful plumage, and the hustle and bustle to seize the best nesting and feeding sites. In that case, the fall season is slower than the spring migration because there is no pressure to find nesting sites. Large flocks of birds can be seen day after day preparing for the long flight to warmer places.
Bird migration is mainly influenced by falling temperatures, lack of food (especially for insectivorous and carnivorous species) and shorter daylight hours. This is why many birds choose to migrate long distances, with some traveling thousands of kilometers from their nesting sites to their wintering quarters every year.
Some species may migrate short distances or not at all, with some birds managing to winter in western and southern Europe. Others, however, follow their biological clock and conscientiously travel long distances to return in spring.

The migration takes place all over Romania and two major corridors can be highlighted. One passes over the Danube Delta and Dobrogea, and the other through the south-western Carpathians and the Danube’s entrance to the country. These areas offer the best birdwatching delights in both migration seasons. You should plan ahead and start booking our birdwatching trips for 2025.
